| HUELVA HOPING FOR MORE OF THE SAME
Real Mallorca have played two of La Liga's top teams in recent weeks, but the arrival of Recreativo Huelva will offer little respite to the Balearic Island outfit this weekend. To their credit, Mallorca managed a return of three points from the games against Sevilla and Real Madrid, but Recre are likely to provide another stern test for Gregorio Manzano's side on Sunday. The Segunda Division champions have been far and away the most successful of the three teams promoted in the summer, and they go to Mallorca seventh in the standings, just six points off of the Champions League places. Recre can count Real Madrid and Valencia among their victims already this season, while Marcelino Garcia Toral's side are unbeaten in their last four matches. Despite his team's impressive showing so far, Marcelino is refusing to look too far ahead and talk of European spots is much too premature according to the 41-year-old.
Retirement age will be decided in Spain
SIR - Our law states that 65 is the age at which an employer tells someone to retire unless they, the employer, has agreed otherwise. Age Concern is mounting a legal challenge to this because it effectively means the continuation of ageism and is clearly against the presumed spirit of the law which is based on equal treatment. Whether one is in favour of Age Concern's challenge, I would have expected such an issue to be decided upon by our High Court but, of course, that is no longer possible since there is an EU Equal Treatment Directive so the case has been referred to the European Court of Justice. Not only can we not make our own decisions but it does seem that Age Concern's case will be defeated because the court's lawyer has concluded this week that in a similar case concerning Spanish workers the employer had the power to fix the retirement age at 65 whether the worker likes it or not.
Bumper Easter in Ibiza
Hotel owners and traders in Ibiza are looking forward to a bumper Easter period which appears set to break all records for visitors. Recent years have seen a growth in the number of sporting events on both land and sea which take place on the island. Our April climate is perfectly suited to all outdoor sports - warm and breezy weather is the order of the day – which keeps yachtsmen, mountain bikers and other athletes happy and content without the danger of overheating. Around 15000 people with some connection to the sports competitions are expected to visit as well as those who come to relax and watch the religious processions. This has kick-started the local businesses connected with tourism and the predicition is that many hotels will be open by 25th of April, a week before the official opening of the season, to cater for visitors arriving in advance of the May holiday weekend.
